The best family planning for you.

A Doctor's Perspective! What are the things we consider before offering you a family planning method?

In Kenya, what we broadly refer to as 'family planning' are actually contraceptives.

As healthcare providers, we understand that choosing the right family planning method is a highly personal decision that is influenced by a variety of factors. Before offering family planning options to our patients, we carefully consider the following:

1. Health History: Your current health status and medical history play a crucial role in determining the most suitable family planning method. Certain methods may be contraindicated or require special considerations based on your health background.

2. Lifestyle and Preferences: Your lifestyle, daily routine, and personal preferences are important factors in selecting a method that will be effective and convenient for you. For example, if you have a busy schedule, a long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) method like an intrauterine device (IUD) may be more suitable than daily pills.

3. Effectiveness: We consider the effectiveness of different methods in preventing pregnancy. Some methods, like sterilization, are permanent and highly effective, while others, such as condoms, may have a higher failure rate if not used consistently and correctly.

4.Safety and Side Effects: We take into account the safety profile and potential side effects of each method. Some methods may have minor side effects that are tolerable for some individuals but not for others.

5. Future Pregnancy Plans: Your plans for future pregnancies also influences the choice of family planning method. If you plan to conceive in the near future, a reversible method that allows for a quick return to fertility may be more appropriate.

6. Cost and Accessibility: We consider the cost of different methods and your access to them. Some methods may be more affordable or easier to obtain based on your location and insurance coverage.

7. Cultural and Religious Beliefs: We respect your cultural and religious beliefs and take them into account when discussing family planning options. We strive to offer methods that align with your values and beliefs.

8. Partner Involvement: We also consider the involvement and preferences of your partner, if applicable, as family planning is often a joint decision.

By considering these factors, we can work together to find the best family planning method that meets your needs, preferences, and lifestyle, helping you make informed decisions about your reproductive health.
